I’m Calling It 55
I suppose after this week is over, I’ll have to figure out some means of income, as June’s rent looms and I sort through the many bills that arrived at my apartment in my absence. I did deposit a thirty-six-dollar check today that was pure T-shirt profit. Thanks, friends of the League. I think it’s high time that I order my own TEAL shirt!
Benjamin crunched our final ratio. We ended up with 54.61% of the total typos found being corrected. This may improve slightly over time if we can go after the corporate-level villainies that were being perpetuated in some signs. And also if loyal readers can check up on the dozens of shopkeepers who claimed that they’d be replacing their signs in a couple weeks anyway. I’m sure at least one or two of them were telling the truth.
We took a walk around Somerville this evening. Along the way, we passed a sign that I momentarily feared had misspelled “kitchen.” It had not. We started to wonder whether the valve we had released at the start of the trip to loose our great and terrible awareness could ever be closed again.

That’s still a lot of typos…
not matter which way you look at it.

Horrors!
If you are going to throw stones, you’d better be sure that your own glass house is impenetrable. Take note of the sentence fragment you wrote and, my pet peeve, the missing preposition “of” in between “couple” and “weeks,” which must, must, must be included in the speech and writing of any literate person.
Thanks for your efforts anyway.

Linda, I fear that your comment illustrates a conflation in the minds of some people, who seem to be confusing cases where genuine typos are involved and those where perfectly acceptable slang is being employed. This latter type of case includes both the phrase “a couple weeks” and useful sentence fragments. I have seen this sort of confusion in many comments on this site. Maybe I should make this the topic of tonight’s blog?

Please do so. And while you’re at it, get a grammar text. There is no excuse for ignorance of the English language. I am not conflating; you, sir, are trying, albeit poorly, to justify your impossibly ignorant error.
And by the way, while you were so busy correcting the subject verb agreement error on someone’s sign, you completely missed the misspelling of Francisco, as in San Francisco. Let the games begin!

Linda, if you could take a couple valium….

I doubt that you would have responded in the same way had a male pointed out your errors.
I have one recommendation: The Little-Brown Handbook. In the glossary, such phrases as: couple valium and couple weeks that omit the preposition “of” are considered substandard English. Maybe that’s okay where you’re from, but it’s substandard nonetheless.

Little-Brown will also mention that a colon should be used after an independent clause, not after a word like _as_.

You are partially correct. The colon after “as” is incorrect. However, colons are also used when a list of items follows. That list need not be an independent clause.
Let me state, as I did in my initial post, that I applaud your efforts to try to eradicate incorrect spelling, grammar, and punctuation. However, I have no need or desire to play the “one-up/one-down” game that you may enjoy. Those who set themselves up as “the” truth walk a tightrope that may turn into a noose. I wish you a loose noose.

Linda- Maybe you are taking this way too seriously, huh?
